Building Excellence: Geotex’s Role in the New Sherman High School and Its Expansion

When Sherman, Texas, envisioned a bold new future for its students, Geotex was proud to help lay the groundwork — literally.

Funded by the November 2017 bond, the new Sherman High School is a 500,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art campus designed to accommodate 2,600 students in grades 9–12. Located on a 98-acre site with a dramatic 44-foot elevation change, the project demanded extensive geotechnical expertise and materials testing oversight.

Geotex provided geotechnical engineering and materials testing services in support of the new Sherman High School, designed by VLK Architects, whose work later earned a 2022 AIA Fort Worth Merit Award. The new campus reflects Sherman ISD’s vision for a learning environment celebrating collaboration, academic achievement, and community pride.

Our Scope of Work:

  • Geotechnical Engineering Services
    • Foundation Recommendations: Drilled shaft systems for main structures, stiffened slab-on-grade for tennis courts, and shallow footing alternatives where appropriate.
    • Earthwork Strategies: Customized solutions for cut-and-fill conditions across the site’s significant elevation changes.
    • Pavement Subgrade Treatments: Lime treatment and aggregate base recommendations for stability and longevity.
    • Athletic Facilities Support: Specialized subgrade and construction testing for tracks, fields, and courts.
  • Construction Materials Testing Services including:
    • Soils testing for proper compaction and stability
    • Concrete testing to ensure strength and quality
    • Pier foundations inspection and verification
    • Masonry inspection for structural compliance
    • Structural steel inspections for safety and performance

The result? A dynamic and resilient campus that houses innovative career and technical education spaces, a grand Pride Walk, expansive athletic facilities, natural light-filled interiors, and numerous outdoor learning areas — all built to serve Sherman ISD’s growing student body for decades to come.

Today, Geotex remains an active partner with Sherman ISD, currently providing construction materials testing for a 33,000 SF expansion. This new addition, funded by the 2023 bond, will increase Sherman High School’s capacity to over 3,200 students by the 2025-26 school year.
